“There is no Planet B!”
“Of course there is! There’s also a Planet C, D, E, F, G, H, and so on ad infinitum!”
“But we must defend Planet A!”
“By moving backwards? The pure state of ‘Nature’ you yearn for does not exist”
“Well what do you propose then?”
“Well, not preserving ‘Nature’ as a thing, but preserving processes of creation by which newness enters the world. That’s why there’s Planets B, C, and D. Alternative futures are always possible”
“But the future isn’t exactly the point, if what we’re talking about is getting back to Nature”
“How about creating new natures, beyond the domesticated Nature of contemporary global capitalism?”
“Okay, now you’re just not making sense!”

The map is not the territory
It was a Sunday, a gorgeous sunny day and, oh yes, I remember now, it was Nowruz. I was at Point Walter and wanted to hike right out to the end of the sandbar – something I hadn’t done since I was a teenager, when I had spent more than a few weekends exploring the area on foot and kayak. Back in those years, from what I remember, the sandbar was at times exposed and at times submerged, depending...

Faith, reason, imagination
Divine nature, rational nature, imaginative nature. In the first two are posited a set of immutable laws, hidden behind nature as it presents itself. We are set above and apart from nature, spectators of the work of the Creator or otherwise scientists observing it from behind the nature-culture divide. In the film Black Orpheus, we are invited into a different conception of the universe. To become...

I haven’t seen a movie in a loooong time, and just realised I don’t really miss it. More than happy with my books! I spend so much time in front of a damn screen working on my writing projects and keeping up with online communications, that it’s really nice to get away from it and just take a book with me to the park or beach. With everyone now carrying their screens around with...

I love democracy too much to leave it up to asshole politicians. I hence resolved after the last federal election in Australia never to vote again. I would, however, make an exception for a penguin. Just as Scottish voters have recently done! See story here.
